National Coordination Groups

Guiding locally driven, science-based conservation

One of our key principles is the active involvement of local experts and stakeholders in identifying and documenting KBAs. That is why a cornerstone of our Programme is the establishment of KBA National Coordination Groups (KBA NCGs), a collective of experts on different taxonomic groups and other biodiversity elements, together with policy practitioners who can support the conservation of the KBAs once identified. These groups ensure that conservation strategies are grounded in scientific evidence and tailored to the unique needs of each region or country.

The purpose of the KBA NCGs

These groups play several key roles:

  • The KBA NCG coordinates activities between different stakeholders to promote the assessment, monitoring, conservation and management of KBAs at the national level.
  • Reviews sites identified by experts before they are proposed.
  • Support the recognition of KBAs in national policy and legislation.
  • Promote the conservation of KBAs.

Who makes up a KBA NCG?

Membership of the KBA NCGs is diverse and includes:

  • NGOs, both national and international
  • Scientific institutions (universities, museums, and herbaria)
  • Government departments and agencies
  • Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities
  • Other important participants can include representatives from the Private sector
