The National Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) Workshop was held in Maputo, Mozambique, from 29 June to 3 July 2026, bringing together experts from government institutions, academia and conservation organisations to assess KBAs using the Global KBA Standard.
Organised by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mozambique in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP), trougth the National Directory of Eviorement and Climate Change, as part of the Building Biodiversity Knowledge for Action in Southern Africa (SBAPP) project, funded by AFD and FFEM.
During the five-day workshop, participants assessed 35 candidate areas across Mozambique to determine their potential qualification as Key Biodiversity Areas. The assessments were based on biodiversity information compiled from the Tropical Important Plant Areas (TIPAs) initiative, previously identified sites of biodiversity importance, species occurrence records, and data collected through recent field surveys. This information was used to evaluate potential KBA trigger biodiversity elements and support the delineation of site boundaries.
The workshop provided a valuable platform for reviewing and validating biodiversity data, discussing site eligibility under the Global KBA Standard, and strengthening collaboration among institutions working in biodiversity conservation. It also enhanced national capacity to apply the KBA Standard and promote the use of scientific evidence in conservation planning and decision-making.
