Site details

Site description: This site also corresponds to the "Reserva Nacional de Flora y Fauna Tariquía", which is located in the southern region of the department of Tarija, in the provinces of O'Connor, Arce, Gran Chaco and Cercado. It is very close to the Baritú Reserve, a protected area in Argentina located to the west of the Tariquía National Flora and Fauna Reserve (SERNAP 2000, Wege and Long 1995). There are also areas of ceja de monte cloud forests. In terms of flora, in the montane forest, above 1,500 m, there are oligospecific forests of mountain pine (Podocarpus parlatorei) and alder (Alnus acuminata). Other species found in these forests include Anadenanthera colubrina, Tipuana tipu, Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Juglans australis, Cinnamomum porphyria, Cedrela lilloi (EN), Tabebuia spp. and many species of the Myrtaceae family (SERNAP 2000). There is also some Andean puna, dominated by high altitude grasslands and some relicts of Polylepis sp. forests. It is estimated that the park has a total of 1,500 species of higher plants (SERNAP 2000). The park's main activity is nature protection; however, some sectors are used for agriculture by immigrant settlers from the valleys and the Tarija Chaco. Livestock (cattle, sheep and goats) in the area is not extensive. SERNAP has conservation actions in the area; PROMETA also carries out several conservation, education, and research projects.
