Site details

Site description: This KBA is located on the western slope of the Sierra de Misiones. The dominant biomes are the "Selvas de Laurel and Guatambú" and the "Selvas de Serranías", including also in the extreme northeast part of "Selva de Serranía con Araucaria" (Araucaria angustifolia). There are large watercourses such as Las Antas, Tarumá and Paranai Guazú streams that offer a diversity of aquatic habitats. There are no cities or large towns within the KBA.
This site qualifies as a KBA due to the presence of the mammal species Leopardu guttulus which triggers criterion A1b.
Additional biodiversity: This site has 4 globally threatened species, 1 (Bird) Endangered (EN) and 3 (1 Reptile, 1 Bird, 1 Mammal) Vulnerable (VU). In addition, it has 10 species (2 Plants, 4 Fish, 1 Amphibian, 3 Mammals) of restricted geographic distribution. The nationally threatened species that have been confirmed so far are the barred owl (Strix hylophila) and the Creamy-bellied Gnatcatcher (Polioptila lactea), the Solitary Tinamou (Tinamus solitarius), the Yellow-browed woodpecker (Piculus aurulentus) and the Southern Bristle-tyrant (Pogonotriccus eximius), the Black-and-white Hawk-eagle (Spizastur melanoleucus), the great Grey-bellied Goshawk (Accipiter poliogaster), which is not categorized as threatened but its presence is of regional importance given its rarity throughout its range and the isolation of the forests of Misiones from those of neighbouring countries. This region should be better prospected to update ornithological information. From the Yaguaroundí PR, 235 bird species have been recorded. The Helmeted Woodpecker (Dryocopus galeatus). At this site, the richness and abundance of birds associated with the Paranaense rainforest floor are striking. On the steep slopes of the Yaguaroundí stream, there are important populations of the Rufous-tailed Antthrush (Chamaeza ruficauda), the Spotted Bamboowren (Psilorhamphus guttatus), the Short-tailed Antthrush (Chamaeza campanisona), the Variegated Antpitta (Grallaria varia), the Speckle-breasted Antpitta (Hylopezus nattereri), and the Planalto Tapaculo (Scytalopus pachecoi). Another species of regular presence is the White-browed Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia amaurotis), a species with few localities in Argentina. Another species of particular importance is the Sao Paulo Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes paulista) which was observed in the marginal forest of the Yaguaroundi stream. In addition to the globally threatened species, the site has numerous species of national importance: the Black-throated Grosbeak (Saltator fuliginosus), an indicator species of the Paranaense mixed forest, but generally scarce in Misiones. The Tawny-browed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana) and the short-tailed hawk (Buteo brachyurus). The Uniform finch (Haplospiza unicolor) was abundant during a fruiting of tacuarembó cane (Chusquea ramosissima) in early May 2004; two weeks later, with few seeds remaining, the species declined markedly in numbers. Land use is varied. The region is surrounded by deforestation fronts, which in the north and west is stimulated by forestry and cattle ranching, and in the east and south by agriculture (yerba mate and tobacco). Within the KBA there are extensive exotic tree plantations, cattle ranches and agriculture. Selective exploitation of native trees occurs throughout the region (Cabanne $ Seipke, 2007).

Delineation rationale: In the northwest, the boundary follows the limits of private properties. The northern boundary partly follows Isla Creek, then Provincial Route 16, a section of Las Antas Creek. This KBA, in the Northeast, follows the cadastral straight line, which coincides with the adjacent KBA to the North, Cuenca del Piray Guazú, so as not to overlap. At the northeast boundary, these property divisions are followed up to National Route 14, which continues to be the border of this KBA and of the lots. This sector incorporates an area containing the headwaters of the Las Antas stream, the AR124 IBA and a locality with a restricted distribution plant. It then continues along National Route 14, alternating with cadastral boundaries and running to the west to exclude totally transformed lots. In this sector, lots containing the headwaters of the Paranay Guazú stream, which contains fish of restricted distribution, are incorporated. The southeastern boundary includes the Reserva de Usos Múltilpes Cuartel Río Victoria to the east of National Route 14. It follows the cadastral boundaries to exclude mostly transformed lots and incorporate those that retain forest cover, thus including, in the southwest, the Reserva Privada La Ponderosa and some headwaters of the Sulma or Victoria creek, a tributary of the Paranay Guazú and a section of the latter. At the western boundary, the property limits are followed, leaving out a sector of the Tarumá stream valley, as it is very degraded, but then adding a sector of similar surface, towards the west. This KBA has 5 interior sectors excluded, because they are very modified and have considerable surface areas.
