Site details

Site description: Pantelleria is a volcanic island, the largest of Sicily's minor islands, characterised by rugged terrain. The landscape is dominated by volcanic cones, lava flows and secondary volcanic phenomena such as fumaroles and thermal springs, including Lake Specchio di Venere. The coastline is jagged, with basalt lava cliffs and clear waters that hide seabeds rich in marine life. The flora is typical of the Mediterranean scrub, with species adapted to the arid and volcanic climate, such as pines, heather, strawberry trees and myrtle. The woodlands consist of Pinus pinaster, Pinus halepensis and Quercus ilex forests.
Manageability of the site: Site identified based on BirdLife International's Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, under which manageability is strongly recommended but not explicitly documented
