Key Biodiversity Areas are useful for guiding countries in three main areas of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF): a. Identification of sites of importance for biodiversity to guide expansion of protected and conserved areas to 30% by 2030; b. Identification of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs); and c. in national spatial planning. A recent paper in 'One Earth' proposes a definition to enhance the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Areas of armed conflict and associated impacts are disproportionally found in or near KBAs

A recent study published in the International Review of the Red Cross found that Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are disproportionately located in or near areas of armed conflict, refugee settlements, and UNHCR activities.
