Site description: The KBA Concepción covers an area of 631.53 sq km and it's located in Perú, in the department of Junín, in the provinces of Concepción (Comas, Andamarca, and Mariscal Castilla districts), Satipo (Pampa Hermosa district) and Jauja (Monobamba district). The main weather is cold, rainy with dry autumn and winter. The average maximum temperature ranges from 9°C to 19°C; while the average minimum temperature is from -3°C to 3°C. The annual precipitation varies between 500 mm and 1200 mm. This KBA includes mainly andean grasslands as vegetation, and encompasses the following ecosystems: "Pajonal de puna humeda", "Periglaciar", "Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga", "Bofedal", "glaciar", and secondary vegetation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds meets the thresholds for A1a, A1e, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors ten endemic geographically restricted species: five birds (Atlapetes melanopsis, Metallura eupogon, Cranioleuca albicapilla, Scytalopus acutirostris and Asthenes palpebralis), two haverstment (Lumieria antonionii and Lumieria woodyalleni), a moth (Metacrisia eckstromi), and a herbaceus plant (Gentianella alborosea). Also have a forest of Polylepis argentea.
Additional biodiversity: Vultur gryphus, Podiceps occipitalis, Lophonetta specularioides, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Rhea pennata, Spatula puna, Anas flavirostris, Anairetes alpinus and Polylepis canoi.
Manageability of the site: The KBA Concepción could be managed by the SERNANP since this KBA limits with the Pui Pui Buffer Zone (Resolución Presidencial N° 033-2019-SERNANP), and the Oxapampa – Asháninka – Yánesha Biosphere reserve (BIOAY, https://bioay.org/). Also, Regional Government of Junín (https://www.gob.pe/regionjunin) could increase the efforts for its conservation, since the KBA includes areas of the Concepcion Regional priority zone and this institution has the capacity to establish Regional Conservation Areas.

Delineation rationale: The boundaries of the KBA Concepción were delineated considering the records of the triggering species, vegetation, ecological continuity and political limits. The KBA is located in the mountains to the northeast of the district of Comas (mainly), province of Concepción, covering a variety of lagoons, valleys, gorges and tributary rivers mainly of the Tulumayo River. To the north, the KBA follows the border between Jauja (province) and a proposed conservation area (Pucuta); to the west the borders reach the tributary of the Tulumayo river. The Andamarca locality is included in the KBA to the southeast.
