Site details

Site description: The KBA Calipuy covers an area of 1071.68 sq km and it's located in Perú, in the department of Libertad, provinces and district of Santiago de Chuco, in the town of Calipuy. The main climate types in the KBA are: (1) cold (12 °C to -5 °C) during the winter from June to August in which precipitation is scarce between 280 mm to 500 mm, (2) high temperatures (18 °C to 28 °C) in the summer between January to March period in which rains of up to 1,200 mm occur in the highlands; erratic rains can also occur in the months of October, November and December. The KBA Calipuy includes the Calipuy National Sanctuary (SNCA) where triggering birds can be seen and heard in the ravines, high Andean scrub, stands of Puya angustata and a dense stand of Puya raimondii, quinuales, and grasslands in the Collayguida zone, Cataceae zone (Shulgomos forest), water bodies and wetlands in the Poygon San Jeronimo zone, including the watersheds of the Huamanzaña and Chorobal rivers, most of which are located between 3,450 and 4,350 meters above sea level. It harbors vegetation typical of Peru's high Andean region, including an important tropical montane rainforest. Within Calipuy National Sanctuary, there are two control posts located to the north of the protected area: Pampa Guanacón and Las Botijas Hill near Llamacate. Important conservation targets are protected in the area, with important flora and fauna. The threats in this area are various and very old, the most serious are the demographic increase and the sanitary problems to wildlife from cattle ranching, the increase in illegal mining, illegal hunting, and the invasion and trafficking of land with the risk of deterioration of the Calipuy National Sanctuary threatening the conservation of the guanaco population and the Puya raimondii stand.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the threshold for the B2 criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs for the range restricted bird species Atlapetes seebohmi, Ochthoeca piurae, and Phytotoma raimondii.
Additional biodiversity: Agriornis albicauda, Vultur gryphus, Geocerthia serrana, Incaspiza personata, Metallura phoebe, Polyonymus caroli, Vanellus resplendens, Charadrius alticola and Gallinago andina.
Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the ANP, it can be potentially manageable by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP.
Other site values: No indigenous communities were identified.
Delineation rationale: The boundaries of the Calipuy KBA follow the junction of the Calipuy National Sanctuary, the Calipuy National Reserve and its buffer zones.
