Site details

Site description: The area is located in the eastern slope from the western cordillera of Colombia. Specifically in the department of Valle del Cauca in the jurisdiction of the municipalities of Buenaventura (Llano Bajo) and Dagua (El Danubio y La Elsa). It covers 53 sq km of tropical moist forest, with a range of altitude from 300 to 1300 m, the land is mainly used for agricultural activities. The clima of this site is characterized by high precipitation (5500 - 7000 mm/year) and temperature (26 to 28 ºC). The KBA is located in the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena biogeographic zone, which is also a biodiversity hotspot, this area is one of the richest regions in biological diversity on the planet but at the same time threatened with a high impact from human activity.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets two previously established criteria (A1a, A1c, and B1) and thresholds described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. This site has three trigger species, two amphibians (Oophaga lehmanni A1a, A1c and B1 - Oophaga anchicayensis A1a, A1e and B1) and one bird (Penelope ortoni A1c).
Additional biodiversity: Alouatta seniculus Ateles fusciceps Perigomphus basicornis Andinobates viridis
Manageability of the site: In this area there are five different organizational figures in charge: community action boards of La Elsa and Llano Bajo, community council of El Danubio, Cooperativa Agroecoturística CORTUCAN, the environmental authority is Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca – CVC and Reserva Forestal Protectora Nacional Río Anchicayá . The decision making is through assemblies between all the regional actors.
Other site values: Comunidad negra Agua Clara
Delineation rationale: This site was delimitated based on the locations where the species were observed in the municipalities of Dagua and Buenaventura (Department of Valle del Cauca), considerating the altitude range reported (between 300 and 1300 meters above the sea level) and the presence of several micro-watersheds of the Digua and Anchicayá rivers (Micro-watersheds Rio San Juan, Rio El Engaño, Rio Cavas) , which is the main habitat for the species. This KBA is covered by a forestal reserve but does not follow its limits.
