Site details


Site description: A rugged mountain chain which forms high cliffs along the south-east coast of Skyros. The dominant vegetation is phrygana with small patches of grassland and Quercus and Acer woodland.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important site for seabirds, raptors and species associated with scrub.

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The most important threat is overgrazing of the phrygana. This is also preventing regeneration of the remnant patches of woodland. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
