Site details

Site description: An area of salt-pans (with fresh water in winter and spring; saline in summer and autumn), largely without vegetation, bordered by agricultural land. Human activities include salt-extraction. The site lies close to Lake Sasko (site 039) and is a transboundary IBA with `Velipoja' in Albania (site AL013).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for breeding and feeding waders, several of which are species of European conservation concern. In summer 1988, 15,000 waders (Charadrii) were counted.

Threats

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Due to the presence of the salt-extraction plant, hunting and human disturbance are controlled, but the industry itself causes some disturbance, and changes in water-level sometimes flood nests.
