Site details
Site description: A stagnant freshwater lake to the west and east of the Schelde-Rhine river connection (shipping lane), which developed after the building of the Oesterdam at the eastern end of the Oosterschelde (028) in 1986. In the south-east the site is adjacent to Lake Markiezaat (030). This site, together with sites 028 and 030, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL050) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is a roost for geese Anser from surrounding feeding areas, but no counts are available.
Delineation rationale: 9 March 2017: area edited. Proposed, but not yet designated as Special Protection Area (Birds Directive).
