Site details

Site description: The site comprises two adjacent areas that contain remnant fragments of a raised bog (formerly 30,000 ha in extent), and includes pools, peatlands, marshes, swampy Betula forest, heathland and grassland. The area is located between the cities of Helmond and Venlo. This site, together with sites 087 and 088, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL056) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: 9 March 2017: name and area edited. Now equal to the designated Special Protection Area (Birds Directive).
