Site details


Site description: Shallow eutrophic lake, with extensive reedbeds extending into Greece (site 023) There is an intensive traditional fishing industry.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified in the CEPF Ecosystem Profile of the Mediterranean Hotspot (2017). Taxonomy, nomenclature and global threat category follow the 2016 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Formerly important for breeding waterfowl including Pelecanus onocrotalus, Egretta alba, Ardea purpurea, Cygnus olor and Oxyura leucocephala; however, no data on breeding species are available for recent years. The International Waterfowl Census counts in winter 1987 and 1988 recorded (1988 data unless stated) Gavia arctica (10), Podiceps nigricollis (40), Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis (10), Aythya ferina (1,150), and Fulica atra (6,350).
