Site details

Site description: A very large archipelago with numerous islands lying offshore of Luvia and Rauma. The central archipelago of Rauma has many very large forested and inhabited islands with smaller islands and islets to its north and south. The other main area is the Luvia archipelago, comprising over 400 islands, most of which are rocky and stony and 0.4-4 ha in size. The larger islands of this archipelago are covered by Picea-dominated old forests, belts of Juniperus and Hippophae, and low heaths.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for island-breeding birds.
