Site details

Site description: A very large and outstanding habitat complex of archipelago, sea bays, river mouths, lagoons and eutrophic lakes at the delta of the Kokemäki river. Large areas of meadow, marsh and deciduous forest on shores considerably increase the diversity of the avifauna. Fishing, boating and hunting are common in some parts of the site.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: One of the most important wetlands in the country for breeding and staging waterbirds, including some of the largest breeding populations in Finland of Podiceps auritus (29 pairs), Botaurus stellaris, Aythya ferina, Circus aeruginosus (16 pairs), Fulica atra (405 pairs), Calidris alpina schinzii (25 pairs), Larus minutus, Acrocephalus scirpaceus and Panurus biarmicus (80 pairs). The site is also an important staging area for several species, including nationally important numbers of Cygnus olor (1,200 individuals), Branta canadensis (1,500 individuals), Tadorna tadorna (300 individuals), Charadrius hiaticula (1,500 individuals), Limicola falcinellus (300 individuals) and Calidris temminckii (300 individuals).
