Site details

Site description: A diverse area west of Helsinki comprising many types of forest, small bogs, numerous lakes, ponds, hills, glacial ridges and rocky ledges. The most typical habitat is nutrient-poor heathland with Pinus sylvestris; patches of herb-rich deciduous forest and old, natural mixed forest are scarcer. Overall, the cover and continuity of forest is very good compared to most of southern Finland. Recreational activities are common all-year-round, however, these are mainly restricted to a wide network of natural and wooded tracks; some parts of the area remain relatively unused.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Phylloscopus trochiloides (15-25 pairs), Glaucidium passerinum (10-20 pairs), and Ficedula parva (10-20 pairs) also breed.
