Site details


Site description: A large offshore archipelago in the middle part of the Gulf of Finland. The area holds many islands with rocky or stony shores. The largest of the islands are forested, with areas of meadows and Juniperus stands.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding area for archipelagic avifauna, especially for Sterna caspia.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: A research station has been maintained for decades on Söderskär island, and bird migration has been very actively monitored for more than 20 years on Kummelskär island. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
