Site details
Site description: The area encompasses a high diversity of habitats including extensive areas of raised bog (Torronsuo National Park is a near-wilderness area), a large eutrophic lake (Talpianjärvi) which is mostly covered by Salix- and Carex-dominated marshes due to falling water-levels, and surrounding arable farmlands.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The area provides important breeding habitats for both farmland and peatland birds, including Gavia stellata (5 pairs) and Perdix perdix (35-45 pairs). Most significant are the high numbers of staging Anser fabalis fabalis and Grus grus (in autumn).
