Site details

Site description: A complex of five adjacent wetlands and adjoining agricultural areas in the southern part of the Kangasala municipality. The lakes and bays are shallow and eutrophic, and surrounded mainly by forests. The farmland inside the IBA boundaries floods in spring, and provides valuable feeding grounds for wildfowl and waders. The area is strongly influenced by man and agriculture is intensive.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important congregatory area for waterbirds, especially Mergus merganser. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (1-5 pairs, breeding).
