Site details
Site description: Several adjacent small wetlands around the settlement of Maaninkaj with surrounding agricultural areas and forests. All wetlands are shallow and nutrient-rich due mainly to nutrient run-off from local fields.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Also nationally important for breeding Botaurus stellaris (3-5 males), Circus aeruginosus (4-7 pairs) and Porzana porzana (3-35 males). Staging species include Grus grus (150 birds), Tringa erythropus (150 birds), T. glareola (500 birds) and Philomachus pugnax (2,000 birds). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (1-3 individuals, passage), Crex crex (1-5 pairs, breeding), Gallinago media (max. 3 individuals, passage).

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The major human impact on waterbirds at the site is autumn hunting. Overgrowth of the wetland is also a threat. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
