Site details

Site description: A large boreal area located east of Pielinen lake and adjacent to the Russian border. Ruunaa lake lies in the heart of the area and divides the site in two: to the east is a conservation and wilderness area, whilst to the west more recreational activities such as boating and fishing take place. There are many lakes within the site and a spectacular network of rivers and streams. Most of the land is covered by stands of dry Pinus sylvestris heath and numerous small bogs.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding area for boreal birds including Tetrao urogallus (100-500 pairs).
