Site details

Site description: A large wilderness area just north of Koitere lake, with mires, more-or-less natural boreal forest and waterways. The mires lie at the junction of the raised bogs of inner Finland and the Pohjanmaa aapa mires. Tourism is evident, especially in summer, with several camping areas, a long network of tracks and board-walks, look-out towers and other facilities. A few roads traverse the area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding area for boreal birds.
