Site details


Site description: A large eutrophic lake surrounded by farmland, in the vicinity of Oulu lake. The shores are fringed by narrow belts of Carex marsh, whilst the shallow waters support stands of Equisetum, Phragmites and Scirpus. Floating vegetation is also abundant. On the shores are numerous settlements whose people fish and hunt on the lake.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding area for Larus minutus.
