Site details

Site description: A large wilderness area between the upper courses of the Iijoki and Kiiminkijoki rivers, with well-developed aapa mires and a multitude of streams and rivulets. Interspersed amongst the peatlands are small islands of mostly primeval boreal forest containing large amounts of dead wood. The area remains predominantly free of human activity.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding area for boreal avifauna, and one of the best breeding sites in Finland for large, shy species such as Cygnus cygnus, Anser fabalis and Grus grus.
