Site details

Site description: One of the most important areas of boreal forest in the Pohjanmaa region. A 25-km chain of boreal forests lies at the core of the site, with additional forests extending eastwards. The landscape is hilly, with one peak reaching a height of 431 m. The forests are dominated by Picea, but deciduous forests cover the lower parts of the hills.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding area for boreal avifauna including Picoides tridactylus and also Tetrao urogallus (500-1,000 pairs), Tarsiger cyanurus (5-15 males), Perisoreus infaustus (100-200 pairs), Parus cinctus (50-100 pairs) and Pinicola enucleator (100-200 pairs).
