Site details
Site description: A large complex of aapa mires and raised bogs on the western side of Oulujärvi lake. The landscape is dominated by wet, low-ridged mires with numerous pools in the centre and drier sedge mires and forested fens towards the edges.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Probably the most important breeding area of Gavia stellata in the country. Also an important breeding site for many other peatland birds.
