Site details
Site description: A large complex of six adjacent mires just north of the Simo river. Practically all types of mires of the Kemi-Tornio region are represented. Kivalo, a 10-km-long series of hills, extends through the area, supporting old forests of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for Arctic and boreal avifauna, especially for waders. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (max. 11 individuals, passage and wintering).
