Site details
Site description: An extensive area of raised bog along the Luiro river. The area belongs to the aapa mire zone of Peräpohjola and comprises many types of mires. Characteristic are large areas of open-water bogs with high ridges between them. The forests are mainly poor, Pinus sylvestris-dominated heath-forests, but flood forests and Betula forests also occur along rivers.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for boreal avifauna, especially for waders.
