Site details

Site description: An important area of natural boreal forests, fjelds and peatland in the heart of Lapland. The forests are mostly natural tracts of old Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies trees. All types of mires found in the Peräpohjola zone are present, including forested, open herb-rich and -poor, twig-abundant and grass-dominated mires.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: An important area for boreal avifauna. Breeding birds include 11 out of the 15 species in Europe that are restricted to the boreal biome (when breeding).
