Site details

Site description: The Tambito Nature Reserve is a private reserve located in the department of Cauca, municipality of El Tambo, in southwestern Colombia. It extends from 1,200 to 2,400 m (Donegan and Dávalos 1999, Muñoz-Nates 2003), covering a wide range of habitats, and includes a great variety of fauna and avifauna, explained in part by its location on the Chocó slope. Biogeographical and altitude gradient involved. The Reserve has a considerable area of primary forest where the presence of threatened and almost threatened bird species has been recorded, as well as some extensions in geographic and altitude distribution. The consequences derived from the forced displacement of the population and the problems of entry at times when public order is disturbed, cause discontinuity in the processes of establishing relations with neighbors and plans for environmental education and alternative management of the environment.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site contains the only known location for Pristimantis diogenes. An additional 44 species of bird meet legacy KBA criteria and are in need of reassessment.
Additional biodiversity: Atelopus famelicus, Atelopus longibrachus
Manageability of the site: This site was originally delineated and validated as an IBA/KBA by BirdLife in 2008. It was identified as a KBA in the CEPF Ecosystem Profile of the Tropical Andes Hotspot (2015). A site manageability rationale is not available.
