Site description: The KBA Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca covers an area of 3667.156 sq km and it's located within the provinces of Caylloma and Arequipa in the department of Arequipa and the province of General Sánchez Cerro in the department of Moquegua. This KBA was delimited based on the boundaries of the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve. The altitude range of the KBA Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca is 2850-6050 masl. The main climate type in the KBA is semi-dry with dry winter. In the region, the maximum temperature ranges from 11°C to 15°C; the minimum temperature ranges from -11°C to -7°C; and precipitation ranges from 500 mm to 700 mm. Following the National Map of Ecoregions, the KBA Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca presents approximately 77% of Dry puna grassland "Pajonal de puna seca", approximately 19% of Periglacial , approximately 2% of lake and lagoon, and approximately 2% of Andean shrubland "Matorral Andino".
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B2 and D1 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. The KBA Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca harbors the Vulnerable Taruca (Hippocamelus antisensis), and range restricted lizards Liolaemus etheridgei and Liolaemus annectens. Also is considered an important aggregation of Phoenicopterus chilensis site at regional and national levels.
Additional biodiversity: Phoenicoparrus andinus (VU), Phoenicoparrus jamesi, Akodon subfuscus , Phyllotis xanthopygus, Eptesicus montanus, Phyllotis limatus, Abrothrix jelskii, Chinchillula sahamae, Abrothrix andinus, Phyllotis magister. Lobivia pampana. Many bird are observed on the site: Vultur gryphus, Agriornis albicauda, Conirostrum tamarugense, Phegornis mitchellii, Phoenicoparrus jamesi, Chloephaga melanoptera, Charadrius alticola, Oreopholus ruficollis, Plegadis ridgwayi, Recurvirostra andina, Spatula puna, Attagis gayi, Thinocorus orbignyianus, Thinocorus rumicivorus, Calidris alba, Calidris bairdii, Riparia riparia, Senecio chachaniensis , Cumulopuntia ignotia
