Site details


Site description: The Lago de Junín KBA covers an area 1539.26 sq km is located in Peru, in the departments of Junín and Pasco, in the province of Junín and Pasco, respectively. The main climate type in this KBA is cold and rainy with dry autumn and winter. The maximum temperature ranges between 9°C and 19°C; the minimum temperature, between -3°C and 3°C; and the annual precipitation, between 500 mm and 1200 mm. This KBA includes the following ecosystems: Pajonal de puna humeda (Wet puna grassland) and Bofedal (Peatlands).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Lago de Junín qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1a, A1e, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. The KBA Lago de Junín harbors two range restricted Endangered aquatic frogs, Telmatobius brachydactylus and T. macrostomus, the endangered fish Orestias gymnota, the endangered and restricted Podiceps taczanowskii, and the range restricted species Laterallus tuerosi, Asthenes virgata, Geositta saxicolina and Cinclodes palliatus.
Additional biodiversity: Many bird are observed on the site: Podiceps taczanowskii, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Vultur gryphus, Laterallus tuerosi, Phegornis mitchellii, Cinclodes palliatus, Theristicus branickii, Asthenes virgata, Geositta saxicolina the range restricted and Lophonetta specularioides, Anas georgica, Rollandia rolland, Gallinafo andina, Plegadis ridgwayi, Fulica ardesiaca, Vanellis resplendens, Larus serranus, Pardirallus sanguinolentus, Fulica gigantea, Merganetta armata, Anas bahamensis, Tigrisoma fasciatum, Gallinago jamesoni, Chalcostigma olivaceum, Charadrius alticola, Geocerthia serrana, Recurvirostra andina, Oreotrochilus melanogaster, Attatis gayi, Thinocorus orbignyianus, Spatula discors, Actitis macularius, Calidris bairdii, Hirundi rustica.
Manageability of the site: Being a Natural Protected Area and its Buffer Zone, the KBA Lago de Junín and buffer zone can be managed by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP jointly with National Forest and Wildlife Service - SERFOR and the Regional Government of Junín. The National Coordination Group of KBAs has a conservation promotion and monitoring committee, which is composed of various governmental and civil society institutions that will work to promote conservation actions in the KBA.
