Site description: The KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park covers an area of 1696.69 sq km and it's located within the provinces of Bagua, Utcubamba and Bongará in the department of Amazonas. The altitude range of the KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park is 350-3600 masl. Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park is in the highest of a series of small mountain ranges separated from the main mountain range, east of the Andes of central Peru. There are five climate types in the KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park, the main climate types are: 1) Temperate, semi-dry with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, the maximum temperature ranges from 21°C to 25°C, the minimum temperature ranges from 7°C to 11°C and the annual precipitation ranges from 700 mm to 2000 mm; 2) Temperate, rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, the maximum temperature ranges from 25°C to 29°C; the minimum temperature ranges from 11°C to 17°C and the annual precipitation ranges from 1200 mm to 3000 mm; and 3) Temperate, very rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, the maximum temperature ranges from 27°C to 29°C, the minimum temperature ranges from 17°C to 21°C and the annual precipitation ranges from 2000 to 3500 mm. The other climate types present in small proportions in this region are: 4) Temperate, semi-dry with dry winter and 5) Warm, semi-dry with dry winter. The KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park presents the following ecosystems: ca. 41 % of Bosque montano de Yunga (Yunga montane forest), ca. 23 % of Bosque basimontano de Yunga (Yunga basimontane forest), ca. 21 % of Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga (Yunga high montane (pluvial) forest), ca. 9 % of secondary vegetation and ca. 4 % Bosque de colina alta (High hill forest). Due to its location within a national park, the use of the area is restricted and regulated. Institutions such as SERNANP, ProNaturaleza, TNC and PATS are currently working on the conservation and sustainable management of the area. The old pressure on the area, mainly in the form of agriculture and forest clearing, is controlled by the National Park authorities.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. The KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park harbors three threatened plants, seven trigger species of arthropods, the Endangered frog Rhinella yanachaga, three range restricted frogs and ten range restricted birds species.

Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park and almost all of its buffer zone, the KBA Yanachaga - Chemillén National Park can be managed by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP (https://www.gob.pe/sernanp) and the National Forest and Wildlife Service - SERFOR (https://www.gob.pe/serfor), and the regional government of Junín (https://www.gob.pe/regionjunin). In addition, the collaborators with the management of Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park are: District municipalities of Huancabamba, Villa Rica and Oxapampa; SENASA, Universidad Nacional Daniel Alcides Carrión (UNDAC); native communities of Alto Lagarto and San Pedro de Pichanaz, DIRCETUR, among others. The National Coordination Group of KBAs has a conservation promotion and monitoring committee, which is composed of various governmental and civil society institutions that will work to promote conservation actions in the KBA.
