Site details

Site description: The KBA Chaparrí is located in Peru, in the departments of Lambayeque (province of Chiclayo: district of Chongoyape) and Cajamarca (province of Chota: district of Llama, Miracosta and Tocmoche) and has an extension of 524.72 sq km. The lower part of this KBA corresponds to a dry forest weather with a temperature ranging from 14.7°C and 28.2°C and an average annual precipitation of around 100 mm. In the upper part of this KBA, it includes three types of climate: (a) temperate, arid with moisture deficiency in all seasons of the year; (b) temperate, semiarid with dry winter, and (c) temperate, rainy with dry winter. The average maximum temperature is 31°C in areas with the first type of weather, between 17°C and 23°C in areas with the second and third types of weather and the annual precipation ranges from 300 mm to 1800 mm. The KBA Chaparrí harbors the following ecosystems classification: Mostly Bosque estacionalmente seco de colina y montaña and in lesser proportion: Bosque estacionalmente seco de llanura, Matorral andino, Bosque estacionalmente seco ribereño and agriculture zones.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Chaparrí qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for the A1a, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This site harbors two geographically restricted moths (Halysidota conflua and Coreura sinerubra) and three geographically restricted birds (Atlapetes albiceps, Penelope albipennis, and Thaumasius baeri).
Additional biodiversity: Phytotoma raimondii, Leptotila ochraceiventris, Rhynchospiza stolzmanni, Piezorina cinerea, Sicalis taczanowskii, Synallaxis stictothorax, Ochthoeca salvini, Forpus coelestis, Icterus graceannae, Myiodynastes bairdii, Myrmia micrura, Syndactyla ruficollis, Ochthoeca piurae, Basileuterus trifasciatus, Atlapetes seebohmi, Tremarctos ornatus.
Manageability of the site: The Chaparrí KBA could be managed by the Muchick Santa Catalina de Chongoyape Community jointly with the Casupe community, Tinajas Forest managers and the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State - SERNANP Source: Comunidad Campesina Santa Catalina de Chongoyape (2005). Plan Maestro del Área de Conservación Privada Chaparri. https://sis.sernanp.gob.pe/biblioteca/?publicacion=323
Other site values: Santa Catalina de Chongoyape Rural Community and Casupe community, Tinajas Forest managers.
Delineation rationale: The limits of the "Chaparrí" KBA coincide to the south with the border of the Chaparrí Private Conservation Area. To the east, it goes around Casupe, around the Tocmoche-Miracosta road and the mountainous border. To the west, it follows the departmental border between Cajamarca and Lambayeque and extends to the northwest towards the border of the Laquipampa KBA and to the north with the departmental border between Cajamarca and Lambayeque, forming a corridor for the White-winged Guan.
