Site details

Site description: The site includes open water (4,800 ha), salt marsh vegetation of sand and mud, coastal sandy vegetation with Elymus mollis, coastal sand hill vegetation, forests, lakes, wetland, sphagnum wetland and peatland vegetation. Notsuke Peninsula is the largest coastal sand dune which was created by sand and mud washed up by ocean currents. Most parts of the peninsula are coastal sandhill grassland and salt marsh, but also there are forests and fresh water lakes, creating various kinds of vegetations. The Bay of Notsuke is shallow and has aquatic plants such as Zostera marina, so the area is very important for birds such as waterfowl, shorebirds, and this area is also important for fishery.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
