Site details

Site description: Daikokujima islet is an uninhabited islet 3 km off shore from Akkeshi Town, and is 1.1 km2 with a perimeter of 6.1 km. In 1951, a part of the southeast island (11% of the whole area) was designated as a Natural Monument by the government because of sea birds breeding ground. A lot of Leach's Storm-petrel, Slaty-backed Gull, Japanese Cormorant breed here. A few Spectacled Guillemot and Tufted Puffin used to breed, but now we seldom observe them.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
