Site details
Site description: The Abukumagawa river with a total length of 239 km runs through Fukushima Prefecture. About 80% of the river basin is in the mountain district. There are a number of waterfalls in various sizes and broadleaf trees near the river. Besides more than 40 species of fish, about 160 species of birds including swans and ducks have been observed in this area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
