Site details


Site description: Aogashima island, which is located 67 km south of Hachijojima, is an oval islet with an area of 5.98 km2 and the circumference of 9 km. It is a typical double volcano with a caldera, and abrasion cliffs at a height of 50 m to 200 m can be seen along the coast.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
