Site details


Site description: Nishinoshima is an uninhabited volcanic island located at about 130 km to the west of Chichijima island, and consists of the old island, the new island and the gravel ground which connected both islands by the explosion in 1973. The site is a breeding site for many seabirds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
