Site details
Site description: Oki islands are situated about 60 km off of Shimane Prefecture, consisting of four islands; namely Nakanoshima, Nishinoshima and Chiburijima that belong to Dozen Islands' group, the Dogo main island and the rest of other islets of more than 180. Oki islands have specific flora influenced by the Tsushima Warm Current and the Liman Cold Current. Dogo's main island is nearly round in shape and has Mt Daimanjisan (608 m) in its central area. Each of Dozen islands is almost trapezoidal in shape with the highest point of about 200 m above sea level, but Mt Takuhiyama (452 m) on Nishinoshima, is the highest point in the Dozen islands.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Alliance for Zero Extinction (2018): site confirmed as an AZE site during the AZE project (2015-2018). Taxonomy, nomenclature and Red List category follow the IUCN 2016 Red List.
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-26 (BL Secretariat): the site includes the 2005/2010 AZE of 'Daisen-Oki National Park' (35°43.39'N 133°15.13'E).
