Site details


Site description: Okinoshima is an islet off of Fukuoka City having an area of 85 ha. The northwest and south sides of the islet are covered with deep forests mainly composed of Machilus tunbergii. Koyajima is a rocky reef situated about 1km south-southeast of Okinoshima. There are no trees covering the rocky reef leaving it almost naked except Carex oahuensis.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
