Site details


Site description: The IBA is located on the south-western boundary of Yunnan, in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Area which includes Jinghong, Menghai and Mengla counties. It has many wide valleys and basins, and is surrounded by low mountains. The climate is influenced by warm and moist oceanic winds from the Bay of Bengal, which allows the development of rainforest and monsoon forest.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas) The site has been reviewed and re-confirmed as a KBA in the process of compiling the revised 2011 CEPF Ecosystem Profile for the Indo-Burma Hotspot.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Parashorea chinensis, Cycas siamensis and Alsophila spinulosa. Animals include Panthera tigris corbetti, Panthera pardus, Neofelis nebulosa, Hylobates leucogenys, Presbytis phayrei, Nycticebus coucang, Bos gaurus and Elephas maximus.
