Site details
Site description: The typical habitat in the Nanling mountains is broadleaf-evergreen forest, including areas of both primary and secondary forests. There are many peaks of over 1,000 m, including the highest mountain in Guangdong Province, Shikengkong at 1,902 m.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Fokienia hodginsii, Pinus kwangtungensis, Tsuga tckekiangensis, Amentotaxus argotaenia, Taxus chinensis and Pseudotaxus chienii.
Delineation rationale: 2009: the two 2004 IBAs Chengjia Nature Reserve (SitRecID 15728; CN421) and Babao Shan Nature Reserve (15727; CN422) have been superseded, as it was realised that they were situated within the 2004 IBA Nanling Mountains (15724; CN423, now relabelled as CN489).
