Site details
Site description: The area consists of Karang Gading Timur Laut, Bagan Percut, Bagan Serdang, Sungai Ular and Pantai Cermin. Bagan Percut is a good site for Milky Stork Mycterea cinerea and Asian Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus. There is mangrove forest behind tidal mudflat.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified in the CI/CEPF Conservation Outcomes poster for Sumatra [Sundaland Hotspot] (2007). Taxonomy, nomenclature and threat status follow the 2004 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Base on the last information, this area probably important for migratory waterbirds. On December 1995 there were around 15000 waders, including Asian Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus and small number of Far-Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis in three areas together with Milky Stork Mycterea cinerea (155 birds). Follow-up survey in 1997 confirmed the observation and found 250 Milky Stork, Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus, Great-billed Heron Ardea sumatrana, Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus and herons. Common Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus probably present, but this need to be reconfirmed for Sumatra. Non-bird biodiversity: Other biodiversity include Aonyx cinerea, Naja sumatrana and Python reticulatus at Karang Gading area (Wibowo & Suyatno 1998, Colijn 1999).
