Site details


Site description: Gunung Kerinci is an unactive volcano and the highest point in Sumatra, located on the northern part of Penuh River. This area dominated by slope forest, lowland forest and upper mountain forest. The area still have lowland forest, which under serious threat by illegal logging and land clearence (Colijn, E.O., 1999. The Indonesian Nature Conservation Database, URL http://www.bart.nl/~edcolijn/index.html).Kerinci Valley covering Kerinci Lake comprises some of Semangka Valley slope, and big enclave formed inside the area. The valley is used for rice field, tea plantation around of side of Gunung Kerinci, and cinnamon plantation. The cinnamon plantation already encroached this area. Threats include logging, firewood collection, forest conversion for plantation and wild hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site contains the entire known population of Philautus cornutus. Additionally, six species of birds meet KBA Criterion B2 and three reptiles, 13 mammals, 14 amphibians and 31 species of birds meet legacy KBA criteria and are in need of reassessment.
Manageability of the site: This site was identified as an KBA in 2003. Most of the site corresponds to Kerinci Seblat National Park which is managed by Balai Besar Taman Nasional Kerinci Seblat.
Delineation rationale: Delineation predominantly follows Kerinci Seblat National Park.
