Site details


Site description: This area including in Brantas Delta. Brantas Delta is a densely populated settlement area (884 people/km2, Anon 1989b). Most of pantai timur Surabaya area categorized as critical area to erotion and proposed to become production forest, protection forest, agroforestry area and plantation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This site is a feeding area for migratory birds. The species of birds in this area include Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus,Mongolian Plover Charadrius mongolus, Asian Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus and Great Egret Egreta alba (Arisandi & Rismanda 1997). The existence of migratory waterbirds indicate that Pantai Timur Surabaya is still good area for waterbirds population.

Habitats


Summary of habitats in KBA: Pantai timur Surabaya is the coast beach area 28 km long, with some mangrove forest (8.2 km long). Covered by mangrove forest in Wonorejo River estuary which heavily damaged (Arisandi & Rismanda 1997).
