Site details


Site description: Gunung Mutis is the biggest mountain forest in western Timor and it has Eucalyptus urophylla vegetation (MacKinnon et.al. 1982, Coates et.al. 1997, Lesmana et.al. 2000).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: The restricted-range bird in this area dominated by highland species such as Chestnut-backed Thrush Zoothera dohertyi and Olive-headed Lorikeet Trichoglossus euteles (Lesmana et.al. 2000).
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 12000 ha to 52788 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Livestock grazing, forest fires, firewood collection, illegal hunting, clearence of land for housing and plantation and uncontrol tourism activities (Noske & Saleh 1996, Monk et.al.1997, Lesmana et.al.2000).
