Site details
Site description: Topography is flat, coasta zone is fish and crustacea producer. This area is muddy holdback to protect for shilting up of Namlea pier, to protect rice field and irrigation network, behind the Kayeli Gulf at Way Apu valley from wave, abration sea water infiltration. There is transmigration camp in Wai Apu that plan to be agriculture product centre in Buru Island. There is four villages in mangrove forest and three villages around. The people in this area generally work as farmer and fisherman. Main comodities are cacao, coconut and marine product (mainly crab).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas) KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 6000 ha to 5699 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
