Site details
Site description: A small, well-forested mountain that is easily accessible from Dili. The forests are on non-calcareous substratum and are considered more species-rich than most other forests on Timor (FAO/UNDP 1982). The forest area is known in Indonesian as ‘Hutan Gunung Maelulu’ (RTK 5) (Ora 2000).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas) KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Fifteen restricted-range species have been recorded in this IBA, including several during a brief visit in 2006 in small patches of secondary forest and coffee plantation with Paraserianthes overstorey (Mayr 1944, CT pers. obs.). Ora (2000) reported the occurrence of the Critically Endangered Yellow-crested Cockatoo on the basis of interviews with forestry workers.
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 13618 ha to 13541 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
